Süreyya Opera House — Kadıköy's Belle Époque Jewel
Halfway up Kadıköy's pedestrian Bahariye Avenue stands a small, perfect 1927 theatre: the Süreyya. Modelled on the opera houses of Europe, it's the cultural heart of the Asian side — and even if you don't catch a show, the façade and foyer are worth the short walk up from the market.

A small opera with big ambitions
The Süreyya was opened in 1927 by Süreyya İlmen, who wanted to give the Asian side its own grand stage to rival the theatres of Beyoğlu. Inspired by European opera houses he had seen, he commissioned an elegant building with a richly decorated foyer — though, the story goes, the stage machinery he ordered from Europe never arrived, so for decades it served mainly as a cinema.
It anchored Bahariye's reputation as Kadıköy's cultural promenade through the early Republic years.
Restored and back on stage
After a careful restoration, the Süreyya reopened in 2007 and now hosts opera, ballet and concerts as a home stage on the Asian side. The interior — gilded detailing, a jewel-box auditorium — is the reason to go in. Even outside performance times you can often admire the foyer, and the lit façade at night is one of Bahariye's prettiest sights.
The Bahariye stroll
The Süreyya sits on the pedestrianized stretch of Bahariye Avenue, lined with shops, bookstores and cafés, running between the market quarter and Altıyol. Combine a walk up from the ferry, a look at the opera, and a coffee on Bahariye — it's the most pleasant way to feel the everyday rhythm of central Kadıköy.

How to get to the Süreyya Opera House
Take a ferry to Kadıköy (about 20 minutes from the European side) and walk 8–10 minutes up pedestrian Bahariye Avenue — the opera is on your left. By Marmaray or metro, Kadıköy and Ayrılık Çeşmesi stations are both within walking distance. A taxi from Sultanahmet runs about 450–600 TL daytime, but central Kadıköy is best explored on foot.
