Kadıköy Çarşı — the Market Heart of the Asian Side
Step off the Kadıköy ferry and walk two streets inland and you're in Çarşı — the dense, delicious market quarter that is the real reason food-lovers cross to the Asian side. Fish on ice, barrels of pickles, mountains of Turkish delight, and at night, meyhane tables spilling into the lanes.

The market by day
Çarşı is a working market, not a tourist set-piece. The fishmongers along the main lanes lay out the morning's catch on ice; nearby you'll find pickle shops with rows of glass barrels (turşu), spice and dried-fruit sellers, a famous coffee roaster or two, and bakeries turning out simit and börek. It's compact and walkable, and grazing your way through it is the whole point.
Look for the long-established names locals queue at — a good rule anywhere in Istanbul is to eat where the crowd is Turkish.
The meyhane streets by night
After dark, Çarşı changes character. The lanes around Kadife Sokak — better known as 'Barlar Sokağı', the street of bars — and the meyhane alleys fill with tables, rakı, and endless plates of meze. It's livelier and cheaper than the tourist meyhanes across the water in Beyoğlu, and the crowd is mostly local. This is where a Kadıköy evening usually ends up.
Why cross the water for it
Plenty of visitors never leave the European side and miss this entirely. Çarşı is the single best argument for taking the ferry to Kadıköy: a 20-minute boat ride delivers you into a market and dining quarter that feels more genuinely Istanbul — and lighter on the wallet — than almost anywhere in the old city.

- Moda — the seaside promenade, 12–15 minutes south.
- Süreyya Opera House — the restored 1920s opera on Bahariye Avenue, just up the hill.
- Yeldeğirmeni — the mural quarter, a few minutes north toward Haydarpaşa.
How to get to Kadıköy Çarşı
This is the easiest one: take any ferry to Kadıköy (about 20 minutes from Eminönü, Karaköy or Beşiktaş) and the market begins a two-minute walk from the pier. By Marmaray or metro, Kadıköy and Ayrılık Çeşmesi stations are both close. A taxi from Sultanahmet runs about 450–600 TL daytime — but the ferry lands you almost on top of the market.
