How to Get from Kadıköy to Taksim
Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue are the beating heart of the European side. From Kadıköy the smart move is the ferry to Karaköy and a short ride up the hill — usually quicker and far cheaper than fighting bridge traffic in a taxi.

Your options to Taksim, compared
| Option | Cost | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferry + funicular (F2 Tünel/Karaköy) | ~45 TL with Istanbulkart | 30–45 min | Scenic, cheap, beats the traffic |
| Marmaray + M2 metro | ~40 TL with Istanbulkart | 30–40 min | All-weather, fully underground |
| Metered taxi | 500–650 TL day · ~50% more at night | 25–45 min | Late night or heavy luggage |
Option 1: Ferry to Karaköy, then up the hill
Take the ferry from Kadıköy to Karaköy — about 20 minutes across the water. From Karaköy you have two easy ways up to the Taksim/İstiklal area: the historic Tünel funicular (one of the oldest underground railways in the world) or a short walk up to Galata and a stroll along İstiklal. The whole trip is around 45 TL with an Istanbulkart and, in daytime traffic, usually faster than a taxi.
This route also drops you right in the middle of Karaköy and Galata — some of the best coffee and views in the city — so it doubles as sightseeing.
Option 2: Marmaray + M2 metro
For the fastest all-weather option, take the Marmaray from Ayrılık Çeşmesi under the Bosphorus to Yenikapı, then change to the M2 metro up to Taksim. It is around 40 TL with an Istanbulkart and stays underground the whole way — no traffic, no weather, about 30–40 minutes including the change.
Option 3: Metered taxi
A taxi crosses the Bosphorus Bridge and climbs into one of the most congested parts of the city. Expect 500–650 TL on the day meter and roughly 50% more at night, plus the bridge toll. In rush hour the same trip can take far longer than the ferry. It's a fair choice late at night or with heavy bags, but in daytime the ferry-and-funicular combo is hard to beat.
Which should you choose?
- Daytime and up for a view: ferry to Karaköy + Tünel funicular — cheap and memorable.
- Bad weather or fastest time: Marmaray + M2 metro, all underground.
- Late night or lots of luggage: a metered taxi over the bridge, meter running.
